Bliss at Your Fingertips - the
Daily Oil
Massage
By: Vasu Nargundkar
How can a ritual so luxuriously relaxing, so blissfully comforting as a
full-body warm oil massage rev up your body and mind, gearing them up
for peak performance? Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old holistic healing
tradition from India, has an explanation for the seeming contradiction.
"Accumulated stress and toxins in the mind and body dissolve during
the daily massage," says Rama Kant Mishra, Ayurvedic expert.
"A daily full-body warm oil massage therefore acts as a powerful
recharger and rejuvenator of mind and body."
"AromaEssence" the Ayurvedic oil massage is an integral
part of the daily routine recommended by this healing system for overall
health and well-being. Traditional Ayurvedic texts wax eloquent on the
benefits. Here's what one says "Give yourself a full body oil
massage on a daily basis. It is nourishing, pacifies Vata and Kapha,
relieves fatigue, provides stamina, pleasure and perfect sleep, enhances
the complexion and the luster of the skin, promotes longevity and
nourishes all parts of the body." When the views expressed in the
different Ayurvedic texts are put together, here are the benefits that
can be expected from regular performance of this pleasant daily ritual:
|
Increased
circulation especially to nerve endings
|
|
¨ Toning of
the muscles and the whole physiology
|
|
¨ Calming for
the nerves
|
|
¨ Lubrication
of the joints
|
|
¨ Increased
mental alertness
|
|
¨ Improved
elimination of impurities from the body
|
|
¨
Softer smoother skin
|
|
¨ Increased
levels of stamina through the day
|
|
¨
Better deeper sleep at night
|
The Ayurvedic massage is traditionally performed in the morning, before
your bath or shower. You can use cured sesame oil, an herbalized massage
oil, or an aroma massage oil.
If you choose sesame oil, look for cold-pressed, chemical-free organic
sesame oil for the best results from your massage therapy. To
"cure" or purify the sesame oil, heat the oil to 212 degrees
Fahrenheit. Remove from heat once this temperature is reached, cool and
store for use as needed. Up to a quart of oil can be cured at a time. Of
course, you should observe safety precautions when curing oil. All oils
are highly flammable. Use low heat, and don't leave the oil on heat
unattended. You can look for professionally cured sesame oil at stores
that sell Ayurvedic products if you'd rather not do the curing yourself.
Healing herbs are important in Ayurveda. Herbalized massage oils contain
a blend of carefully chosen herbs known for their ability to strengthen
the physiology and balance the mind. So the daily massage with an
herbalized massage oil has twice the beneficial power the benefits
from the massage and the wisdom of the herbs. Country Mallow, Winter
Cherry and Sensitive Plant are some Ayurvedic herbs you'll find in
herbalized massage oils. Country Mallow is renowned for its nourishing
effect on the physiology. Winter Cherry, a powerful adaptogenic, aids
the body's natural ability to withstand stress, and helps balance the
mind and emotions. Sensitive Plant helps nerve regeneration.
Aroma massage oils also deliver double the benefit the healing
aromas in the massage oil blend, if properly chosen, are particularly
effective in balancing the mind and emotions while the act of the
massage works on both body and mind. Ayurveda recommends different base
oils and aroma blends depending on what you are attempting to balance.
Coconut oil, for example, is a cooling base oil. When combined with a
relaxing aroma oil such as lavender, this massage oil will be effective
in cooling down the mind, body and emotions. Sweet Orange or Geranium
Rose aroma oils are fragrant and relaxing, Basil or Rosemary are vibrant
pick-me-ups. If you have a favorite aroma oil or blend, try making your
own aroma massage oil by adding 5-10 drops of the essential oil or blend
in 4 fl. oz. of the base oil. Almond oil, a light olive oil or jojoba
oil can all work as base oils.
So how is the massage done? Use comfortably warm massage oil. (Store
your massage oil in a plastic flip-top and warm it by holding the
container under running hot water for a few minutes) Dip your fingertips
into the warm oil and apply it lightly to the entire body. Wait for 4-5
minutes to let some of the oil be absorbed by your skin. Then massage
the entire body, applying even pressure with the whole hand palm and
fingers. Apply light pressure on sensitive areas such as the abdomen or
the heart. Use more oil and spend more time where nerve endings are
concentrated, such as the soles of feet, palms of hands and along the
base of the fingernails. Circular motions over rounded areas such as
your head or joints, and straight strokes on straight areas such as your
arms and legs, work best. After you're done, relax for 10-15 minutes,
letting the oil and the massage do their magic. Follow with a relaxing
warm bath or shower.
If your schedule doesn't allow for a daily massage, try and squeeze it
in at least 3 or 4 times a week. You'll find it's worth it!

We all know the many benefits
that people derive from receiving a massage. When ayurvedic physicians
recommend that their patients perform self-massage at home, initially
usually there is some reluctance. However, once one experiences how easy
it is and that it creates an inner calm and sense of well-being,
AromaEssence is easily integrated into one's daily routine.
AromaEssence is also a way to take
care of yourself through the healing power of touch. Women are
especially attentive to nourishing friends and family but often gloss
over their own needs. Just as it is important to feed the body with
warm, healthy, delicious food, it is important to nourish the body and
skin through the power of touch. An "AromaEssence" a day can
indeed help uplift the mind and emotions... and perhaps keep the doctor
away.
Home AromaEssence is a morning warm
oil massage that takes between 10 and 45 minutes, followed by a warm
shower. The skin is the largest organ of the body and the source for our
experience of heat, pain, pleasure and all physical sensations. Massage
on this sensory organ has far-reaching effects on our health and well
being. AromaEssence prepares both the mind and body for smooth full
functioning during the day. Just as a machine needs regular oiling for
good performance, the human body benefits from regular massage. It is
good for all body types, balances the doshas and nourishes all the
tissues and organs. Ayurveda has long recommended AromaEssence to help
retard aging and keep the skin looking smooth and supple.
AromaEssence also helps to release
impurities and toxins that accumulate in the skin. Massage helps to
dislodge deep-seated toxins, which are then circulated through the
digestive tract and released through the elimination process.
Self-massage gives more energy throughout the day, calms the emotions
and keep the mind clear and focused. Ayurvedically, excess vata is
immediately calmed down at the start of AromaEssence, which in turn balances
the other doshas.
AromaEssence is done with warm oils
suited to your particular doshic imbalance. Warm oils are recommended so
they can penetrate the layers of the skin. After the massage, it is
recommended to leave the oil on for 10 minutes to 45 minutes. The longer
the oil is on, the deeper it penetrates. During this time you can gently
read, rest, shave, cut nails, and get ready for the day.
According to ayurvedic
physicians, AromaEssence should not be done in the evening but in the
morning, to help move out toxins in the body that have been accumulating
through the night. Tthe oil needs to be showered off, otherwise it can
disturb or clog the shrotas or fine channels in the body, which can make
you more tired during the day. The best way to clean off the oil is to
take some paper towels and gently dab off the excess just prior to your
shower. Then take a warm shower but do not use soap, even natural soap,
where you have applied oil. The detergents can penetrate the skin, and
that would not be beneficial for the body. Since most of the oil will
have been absorbed into the skin and any left over wiped off with paper
towels, your skin will be left looking lustrous after your shower, as if
you have applied a rich moisturizer after drying off.
Remember that whatever is put
onto the skin is eventually absorbed into the blood stream. Your skin
literally absorbs what you apply. Therefore, it is important to use
products that are natural and which you could theoretically eat. Many of
us use creams and cosmetics with heavy preservatives and chemicals that
contribute to free radical damage and leads to premature aging and
disease. Sensitive individuals may even notice that they get a headache
with the application of a chemical-laden or artificially scented hand
cream.
Perhaps the perfumes or
artificial ingredients in the hand cream contribute to the imbalance.
You can be assured that Maharishi Ayurveda Products International uses
only the finest natural ingredients in their personal care products.
Whenever possible, use oils that
are cold pressed, chemical free and organic. If your doshas are in
balance the organic sesame oil is the best massage oil to maintain
balance. Filled with vitamins and calcium, sesame seed oil has been
shown to have antioxidant properties that protect and nourish the skin
and inner organs.

Our
luxurious Body Lotions are made with an all-botanical base and fine
quality oils such as Sweet Almond, Avocado, Apricot Kernel, and
Jojoba, which are easily absorbed, moisturizing, and nutritious to
the skin. Sweet Almond is nearest to the natural oil found in the
skin and is beneficial for eczema as well as little wrinkles around
the eyes. Avocado oil is valued for its Vitamin D, while Apricot
Kernel has A and C. Jojoba (Jojoba simmondsia chinensis) was
recorded by botanist H. F. Link in 1822 in Baja California and named
after a fellow British botanist/explorer, T. W. Simmonds. We use
organically grown Jojoba oil, which is technically a wax rather than
an oil and especially suited for aging skin. Only pure, finest
quality essential oils are in our lotions-and we feel they are well
worth the extra cost because they impart their vibrancy to the
lotions. If you are particular about what you put on your body,
these Body Lotions are lightly scented, moisturizing, and
long-lasting on the skin. They are available in a variety of
beautiful essential oil blends from floral to spicy.

| Tribute |
Blue
chamomile, lavender, rose, cinnamon leaf, ylang ylang
I
designed this lotion as a tribute to my mother, Carol Seago
Atkins, and to all motherswho give so much of their love
and their lives in countless ways to their families. (This
is one of my favorite pictures of my mother taken in 1938!)
With a easy sense of humor and a smiling face, my mother
made sure we had balanced, home cooked meals that could
rival any restaurant. (I attribute her wonderful sense of
taste to my present-day pickiness about food!) She made our
clothes. She drove us for thousands of miles to our school
activities and put up with band practice for years! She
tolerated our tantrums over teased hair with a hole
that required lots of Aqua Net hair spray. All that in
someone who was so pleasant, dedicated, and unselfish. And
now I have come to realize that my mother is also a very
beautiful, strong, intelligent, independent woman behind
that lady! So, of course, Tribute has a mixture of
personalities to reflect the complexities that we all are.
Carol is not into blah food or blah fragrance.
She loves ylang ylang, spice, and things that have
panacheso this lotion, as my mother would say, es muy
bueno! This lotion definitely has a blue cast to it
from the Blue Chamomile! Essential oil of carnation is
strengthening to the aura. Not only does rose have a
powerful effect on the heart chakra but also it is
antidepressant, antiseptic, antiviral, and a tonic. Lavender
has been used as a folk remedy for comforting the stomach
and as an insect repellent and is recognized today as the
most versatile essence therapeutically. Cinnamon not only
smells yummy but also has been used over time for rheumatism
and as a powerful germicide. Join me in a Tribute to
all mothers!

|
Lemon Hand Cre่me |
| This
hand creme is my creation. I wanted something
heavier than a lotion to massage into my hands and nails
(and even my feet) before bedtime so it could work
overnight. When I am making product, I wash my hands
repeatedly with liquid soap and do not use lotion; so
they are really dry by the end of the day. This thick
cream comes in a jar and is rich with jojoba and avocado
oils and mango butter. It easily absorbs into the skin
and nails, leaving a silky, protective finish.
Ingredients include distilled water, coconut and soy
oils, vegetable emulsifying wax, mango butter, vegetable
glycerin, aloe vera, vitamin E, and grapefruit seed
extract with essential oils of organic Lemon from Italy
and Myrrh. |
