NATURAL HERBAL INCENSE Is made by grinding in a mortar or other device the 
herb, wood or resin into a fine powder. If the incense is to be combined with other 
ingredients to form a blended fragrance or potion the finer the grind the better the 
products will mix into an even blend. These fine ground ingredients are sprinkled over
a burning charcoal tablet to release the aroma.

A second way is to burn natural incense is by adding Tragacanth powder or Gum 
Arabic to the mixture. This acts as a glue that when dry will hold the ingredients into 
what ever shape you have molded them. In all cases Potassium Nitrate must also be 
added to the molded mixtures in a ratio of 1 part for every 10. ie: 10 oz of mixture 
use 1oz Potassium Nitrate (niter). If the bulk of your blend is mostly dried herbs or 
woods with less than 20 percent by volume in resins you can just add the glue and 
niter. As the percentage of resins in the mixture goes up you will need to add a base
of ground charcoal or wood pulp so the niter will have something to soak into.

Base:
Pure Granular Charcoal or Sandalwood, white pine, well powdered 1.5 oz Your herbal
blend well powdered 1.0 oz If you have it add well ground oris root .1 oz fixes aromas 
Combine these into a good sized mixing bowl i.e.: one you can get both hands into. 
Tragacanth add 1/2 teaspoon to a cup of water and beat with a whisk this will create 
a froth but it will settle. When the Tragacanth is dissolved cover the mixture and let it
set for an hour or so. At the end of an hour if it has formed a heavy paste great, if it is
 very thick and lumpy add water a little at a time and stir. You want a heavy paste. 
If it is thin and runny add a small additions of Tragacanth stirring each addition very 
well in fact it would be best to let the mixture sit between additions. Next weigh out 
.27oz of Potassium Nitrate place this in a clear glass. Add warm water a couple of 
spoons full at a time stirring with each addition. When the Potassium Nitrate is all 
dissolved add the water to your bowl of ingredients. Be sure to put on a pair of rubber 
or plastic gloves now start mixing by hand get it all as wet as you can. If the water is 
not all absorbed add small amounts of powdered wood or a major fragrance dried 
herb and mix until water is absorbed. The mixture should be damp but water 
shouldn't pour out if you squeeze a lump. Now add spoons of the Tragacanth or 
Gum Arabic mixture. Mix each spoon full into your blend until it reaches a thick 
dough like texture. Spread a piece of wax paper and form the shapes you want cones ,
blocks, or long tubes. On your first effort try not to get real fancy.. When you have 
finished place the forms in a warm dry place (warm not hot) and let them dry for 
several days ( could be anywhere form 2 to 7 )

For oil soaded sticks or cones in small quantities: Just buy some blank sticks 
or cones and a good quality fragrance oil. Take the ribbon off the bundle of sticks 
(100) lay them flat in a shallow pan that you aren't going to use for cooking ever again. 
Pour at least an ounce of oil over the sticks. Then using a plastic bristle paint brush 
start painting the oil onto the sticks. Roll them over in the oil residue in the bottom 
of the pan until there is none remaining. Let the sticks dry for 2 to 7 days. This one 
is a sure fire deal. The same goes for cones only use two ounces of oil for 100 cones 
as they absorb more.
